Finance Intern

June - August 2021 • Irving, TX

What I liked

I liked the structure of the program. It was a ten-week rotational internship program, where I had the chance to work on a variety of different teams within the company. I also enjoyed how meaningful the work itself was. I felt that I wasn't given busy work but, rather, work that was going to help improve the company's daily operations.

What I wish was different

I wish that I had this internship during a non-COVID era so that I would have the opportunity to interact with more people in-office. I worked via a hybrid model, where I could choose whether I went into work or not. I found that many of the interns went into the office while many of the experienced hires chose to stay home. I felt that this made it a bit challenging to get over the learning curve for certain projects.

Advice

I would advise any incoming interns to come into the experience with a willingness to learn and a positive attitude. It will go a long way in making people you interact with enjoy working with you. Your job as an intern is essentially to be an information sponge that takes in as much information as you can about the work you are doing and the people you are working with.

Sales and Business Development Intern

May - August 2019 • Dallas, TX

What I liked

I loved the ability to travel across the country. As a sales intern, I was able to fly to Dallas & Odessa Texas, Charleston, West Virginia, and EatonTown, New Jersey to experience sales in different climates. In addition to being paid for all of my travel and hours learning, I was able to grab the wheel myself when my mentors allowed me to take the lead on sales calls. At the end of the internship, I had been to a week-long national sales meeting, lead sales calls at over 60 independent optical shops, networked with employees ranking as high as the CMO for a company with returns in the billions, and finally' researched and completed a 15 minute presentation on The Mobile SalesForce Application and ways that further integration of this technology can improve sales efficiency in the field and collaborative communication between both sales reps and ECPs (Eye Care Professionals).

What I wish was different

I loved this opportunity and am incredibly thankful for it. From the ability to travel, to gathering insight on sales, and finally being able to make as much as I did, I find myself lacking significant things that I wished had been different. However, I do wish that the company had given me stricter boundaries with composing my presentation. Although this "open-endedness" let me gear my project to be diverse with my delivery and content, having more specific criteria would have allowed me to hone in on exactly what it is that my audience wants to see.

Advice

One piece of advice that I would offer about this experience would be to never feel like you are asking too many questions. I asked more questions throughout the summer with Essilor than I ever had in an internship before and it led to me having the most fulfilling and informative experience that I could have asked for.
