Engineering Consulting Services (ECS)

Assistant Environmental Manager

November 2016 - May 2018 • Chantilly, VA

What I liked

Every day was different. Worked on projects from the beginning to the end. Got a lot of experience and training in the field along with in the office. Learned a lot and had a lot of networking. Focus was on younger staff and training, a lot of social events outside of work and marketing. A lot of opportunities to manager and take control of your projects.

What I wish was different

Working past 40 hours wasn't compensated for. Having to make sure you hit a certain amount of "billable hours", not a good work life balance.

Advice

Take any opportunity given to you, even if its working on a job site late at night or early in the morning. Working right outside Washington D.C. I took any opportunity with jobs and networking.

Geotechnical Engineering Intern

May 2018 • Daytona Beach, FL

What I liked

I liked everything about this internship. It gave me the opportunity to learn so much in such a short amount of time, and I would feel confident having a conversation about geotechnical engineering and construction materials testing with an interviewer or any other business professional. I was able to work in both the field and the office and learn exactly what the testing methods mean and how to conduct the tests. I learned how to complete the lab tests that are associated with both the soils and the construction materials.

What I wish was different

In the first few weeks, I was very overwhelmed with meeting people and learning so many new things. I wish I realized that this happens at every new job, even if you are an expert in the industry. My coworkers made me feel at home and more confident in what I was learning and performing. They assured me that it is truly impossible to not have to ask questions at a new job and that asking questions is not a bad thing, especially as an intern.

Advice

My best advice is just to explore any area that you may be interested in and do not be afraid to take the risk of applying to something out of your comfort zone. An internship could and probably will set you up for the rest of your professional career and it will give you the experience that employers are looking for upon graduation.

Environmental Engineering Intern

June - August 2018 • Chantilly, VA

What I liked

I enjoyed the broad span of field work I was engaged in during my internship. I learned a lot about being a consultant.

What I wish was different

I wish there was more work to be done. A lot of the time, the interns had nothing to do.

Advice

Never be afraid to ask your supervisor for work.
