Energy Optimizers, USA

Engineering Co-Op

January 2020 - December 2022 • Dayton, OH

What I liked

Energy Optimizers, USA is a smaller company that allows for consistent and detailed collaboration between all associates. This allows everyone to truly get to know each other and maintain the family environment that has been created here. Everyone is eager to learn and help each other for the betterment of each person and the company. The philosophy of proposing projects to customers that save them money without overcharging makes coming to work everyday feel good.

What I wish was different

As my first rotation at Energy Optimizers, USA was during 2020, there were quite a few setbacks and limitations placed on associates and the company. Due to these circumstances, site visits and consistent in-person collaboration was limited. Being on site is crucial to learning the field and seeing in the real world, what you're being taught in the classroom. As I have completed 3, working on my 4th rotation here at Energy Optimizers, USA I can say that everything has got back to our new normal and getting in the field is no issue.

Advice

Everyone is so eager to develop and expand the knowledge base within the company, don't be afraid to ask questions. Anytime you enter a new field, there will be plenty of things that may be implied once you've been in the field for a while, but for a new person is not implied. Even topics that are not currently being discussed, someone will help you understand at the earliest convenience. Definitely, spend time searching for new outlets to absorb information and expand your knowledge, it may be helpful to this company or others later in life.

What I liked

The thing I like most at Energy Optimizers are the the people. From the first day I started here until now, I have felt nothing but acceptance and encouragement from my co-workers. Everyone here is eager to help you succeed in any way they can through guidance on certain procedures, explaining how each project is developed and implemented, providing networking opportunities, and allowing you to focus and gain experience in aspects of projects that interest you most. I have been treated like a real engineer here and have been given the responsibility to manage projects in the same way I would after graduation. The other engineers are always here to help guide you and answer any questions you have when working through projects.

What I wish was different

One thing I wish would have been different was the communication between each department. Because there are many projects happen at once, there are varieties of project scopes that are constantly changing. During developing a project, the scope of the project can change and those changes sometimes weren't communicated well to everyone involved. The lack of communication would sometimes delay project deadlines or cause confusion between departments. While communication could be different, it is something everyone is constantly working on and trying to improve.

Advice

The one piece of advice I would give is to not be afraid to ask questions. There are always many projects in the process of development and implementation here. With several projects happening at once, there are always many moving parts that are included. At the beginning of my co-op, I really had no idea what anyone was talking about. As I became more familiar with the process through asking questions and going out into the field regularly, I became increasingly more comfortable. Don't be afraid to put yourself in uncomfortable situations here because you have many people who are here to help and want to see you succeed.
