Emory University - Laney Graduate School

Undergraduate Research Assistant

May - August 2023 • Atlanta, GA

What I liked

I liked the opportunity to research in a lab facility and work with graduate students. I also loved that I got to make a poster and present at my first symposium.

What I wish was different

I wish that I could have done research in an area pertaining to my area of interest.

Advice

You must go in with an open mind. You might be assigned to a lab working with unfamiliar concepts. Use the opportunity to learn and challenge yourself to master new skills.

Biology Research Intern

May - July 2019 • Atlanta, GA

What I liked

I learned a lot of new research techniques and was told a lot of details about graduate PhD programs.

What I wish was different

I wish the NIDDK STEP-UP program has provided on-campus housing so that I could socialize with people on-campus.

Advice

I would say to anyone looking to gain experience in a new field that they should work hard on their applications and be open to the whatever opportunities come their way.

Biostatistician Intern

June - August 2018 • Atlanta, GA

What I liked

I got a great opportunity to explore the growing field of biostats and learn some of the programs used by those working in the field. We had a lot of exposure to different contexts for the use of biostats.

What I wish was different

The program is unpaid, and can be a steep learning curve for those new to statistics and computer programming.

Advice

If you are at all considering biostatistics, this is a really good chance to explore it more as well as bioinformatics. Would very much recommend.
