Elizabeth City State University

Orientation Leader

June - August 2021 • Elizabeth City, NC

What I liked

I gained such a rich knowledge of my institution. I learned the history and foundation of my illustrious HBCU. I was given the honor of interacting with the new students attending Elizabeth City State University. I was driven by their excitement to attend my university, and I connected with various faculty and staff members through this internship opportunity.

What I wish was different

Because of covid, there were certain restrictions and limitations with interactions with the parents and students. There were communication difficulties because of that.

Advice

One piece of advice I would share about this experience is the importance of being patient and empathic when interacting with others. There are people with different backgrounds entering a new stage of their life coming to you as a resource. Be understanding of their emotions and help them through the process.

Undergraduate Research Assistant

May - July 2020 • Elizabeth City, NC

What I liked

It was remote and the schedule was flexible. I was in charge of my own project and I liked the idea of being able to ask my own questions and essentially direct my own review.

What I wish was different

I wish I could talked more with my peers about the research.

Advice

Research in general can be difficult sometimes but one thing I learned is it's 100% okay to ask questions. Starting out you aren't going to know every thing and you aren't supposed to. The whole idea of research is to learn something new! Don't be afraid to ask a lot of questions and take notes.

The staff treated me as if I was apart of the team and made sure I understood everything I needed to know to complete my tasks.
