Education at Work

Microsoft Surface Support Engineer

December 2021 - June 2022 • Tempe, AZ

What I liked

I enjoyed the tangible knowledge I gained of real world products like the Microsoft Surface line. It was great being exposed to a genuine working environment in the field of tech, a simulation of what working at Microsoft might be like. Finally, I did enjoy the flexibility I was offered with this particular employer, who was fully appreciative of the fact that I was a full-time student.

What I wish was different

I wish the leadership had been more stable and in-charge of things. Life often became chaotic quite fast at this job, which was a non-issue to me - until it became my issue specifically.

Tutor

March - June 2017 • East Chicago, IN

What I liked

I loved being around the students and knowing that they were safe in my care. I also thought the supervisor was a nice and caring man.

What I wish was different

I felt like I was a babysitter. There was no real tutoring really happening aside from one project. The teachers in charge just sat talking to one another while the students did what they please. I wish more education could have been done.

Advice

Don’t expect much. It’s a great idea to have this program but there isn’t much education happening.

Tech support agent

May - August 2019 • Tempe, AZ

What I liked

All student workforce. Good pay and good hours. Partnered with Microsoft, so good for resume.

What I wish was different

I wish the expectations were more clear and uniform. There was an expectation to work a minimum of 18 hours to meet the 16 hour requirement for tuition assistance. I notified 3 supervisors that I will be working 15 hours maximum during Fall 2019 semester due to academic commitments (busy class schedule) and they all told me it was not a problem. Well, come August, it was a problem and they asked me to resign. If I had known ahead of time, I would have started looking for another job sooner, and I would not have been unemployed for a month.

Advice

Demand clear and uniform answers. They want to make sure you have a good time working for them, but they sugar coat a lot of bad news.
