What I liked

I really appreciated the opportunity to do hands-on work in the lab. Working on a project that I knew was being used -- knowing that my contribution was valuable -- was also exciting.

Process Improvement Intern

May - August 2018 • Kingsport, TN

What I liked

The work that I was assigned was meaningful to the company. The projects I worked on resulted in annual costs savings in the six figure range and impacted the way the company would make certain products in the future. My boss always had work for me to do if I asked for it. The tri-cities area had a wide variety of local business, festivals, and outdoor activities. Housing was reasonably priced.

What I wish was different

The housing provided by the company was a thirty minute drive from the plant. I would have liked to stayed closer.

Advice

Get to know the people around you. At a company this size networking is the only way you will be able to get in touch with the right people to get your project done. Work isn't like school where all the data you need is in the textbook, you will have to take some measurements and make some assumptions. A lot of times, the best solution isn't the one that is 100% accurate. It is the one that is 90% accurate, but still safe, that will get the project in motion.

Advice

At Eastman I learned what it takes to become a great engineer. It takes experience. And what better place to learn than at Eastman. I was given the opportunity to serve as a Mechanical Engineer in many roles, lead value adding projects, collaborate with all types of engineers to solve problems, and learn design and machine skills. Eastman taught me what it means to be a Mechanical Engineer. Their mentorship program for their co-ops and interns creates an environment of learning, achievement, and success. I highly recommend seeking engineering experience on your path to becoming an Engineer.
