East Carolina University

Student Developer

October 2022 - May 2023 • Greenville, NC

What I liked

Flexible work hours, as well as understanding work environment. The research/work opportunity was also in a field that I genuinely enjoyed performing work within and gave me a sense of fulfillment.

What I wish was different

More direct contact with my coworkers, as well as more preparation for certain tasks that were given right before it was needed to be completed.

Advice

Be ready to spend time studying and preparing for new software, rather than programming languages. While coding languages were extremely useful to design and build projects, being able to use noncoding software to create similar project demands was a requirement of the job, and something that is not practiced as much as programming for the field.

Research Assistant

June 2022 • Greenville, NC

What I liked

I love the opportunity to get to know participants within the research study and help them on their journey to better health and fitness.

What I wish was different

One thing I might change would be scheduling so that it could be more permanent then constantly changing.

Advice

My best piece of advice is to talk to anyone and everyone and always ask how you can learn more or help out! That will take you the farthest.

Biology Research Intern

May - July 2019 • East Carolina University, NC

What I liked

I genuinely enjoyed working with the grad student and Principal Investigator in the lab. They made the research so fun and I loved going in each day. I got to work with human neurons and brain organoids with aims to potentially find treatments for neurodevelopmental disorders such as Autism in particular. The lab I worked in is doing something so special and to be a part of that is priceless and something I will take with me forever.

What I wish was different

Advice

I would advise anyone interested in science to apply to summer internships and REUs! It's a great way to get out there and learn a lot while doing something you love. It's an experience I will carry with me forever and it will, no doubt, help me in achieving my future endeavors.
