Camp Counselor

May 2018 • Colorado Springs, CO

What I liked

Not only was this a job, but it was also a strong community. Those that I worked with during the summer I built close relationships with and I am still friends with. The programming was excellent and organized, the leadership supported their staff in every way (physically, emotionally, relationally, etc). The kids that were worked with each day were fun to be around and it was easy to connect with the kids on different levels.

What I wish was different

I do wish that there would be more off time during the week.

Advice

If you value your alone time, know that it can be hard to find. You must prioritize the things that you need to stay healthy because there is a lot to do in a day. But this is one of the best jobs I have had once I figured out how to prioritize my needs.

Camp Counselor

May - August 2019 • Colorado Springs, CO

What I liked

Working at camp this past summer was amazing and exactly what I needed. It was hard and challenging, but it was so good. I worked for an On Location team, so my group got to bring church camp to various towns and communities in Colorado and Missouri for ten weeks. It was constant changing and moving all the time, but it was such an amazing reminder that our stability is found in Jesus amidst everything that is changing around us. I appreciated how my leadership team cared for our counselor team amidst the challenge of camp, their support, guidance, and intentionality with counselors was so amazing. I also greatly appreciated the values of Eagle Lake and their focus on pointing campers to Jesus and the Bible. Another thing I found to be unique about Eagle Lake is their desire for counselors to build intentional relationships with each of their campers, which they do in the midst of fun and exciting outdoor activities.

What I wish was different

Nothing specifically comes to mind, it was an overall challenging and good experience.

Advice

If you decide to apply and commit to camp, try to go in without expectations. It's easy for us to place expectations on whatever we're doing, but try to go into camp open and curious about what you'll get to learn. Also, remember that though it's going to be a lot of fun, it is also going to be challenging physically, mentally, and spiritually. Be open to learning how to depend on Jesus and ask Him to meet you there.

On Location Camp Counselor

May - August 2019 • Colorado Springs, CO

What I liked

Getting to travel to Nebraska, Iowa, South Dakota, Missouri, and Colorado for the entire summer. I was able to live with a new host family each week and loved getting to meet new people and have new experiences that I wouldn’t have gotten back at home, like riding ATVs and eating Kansas City BBQ and watching a c-section on a cow.

What I wish was different

It’s quite difficult to have any alone time considering you’re either always with kids, your host family, or the other counselors. Would have been nice to have some more time to ourselves, but it allows you to adapt to a new experience of always being surrounded by others.

Advice

Be a camp counselor!! Enjoy your time for these ten weeks because it goes by a lot faster than one thinks, and you make such close connections with the other counselors and one day it all ends. Keep in contact with people!

Camp Counselor

May - August 2017 • Colorado Springs, CO

What I liked

I loved the daily interactions with campers and my co-workers as well as the bonds we formed over the course of the summer.

What I wish was different

I wish I had known about Eagle Lake sooner. While camp counseling is not where I hope to end up after graduation, the same kinds of skills in communication, cooperation, and compassion are key for my career in teaching.

Advice

I would say never be afraid to take advantage of an opportunity that appears to be unrelated to your professional goals. Every opportunity can teach you something; you may just have to work harder or look deeper to discover the connections.
