I was assigned to the Women's Cancer Center in Raleigh where I had the opportunity to spend nine weeks primarily shadowing two different nurses. I spent the first four weeks in the clinic, where I was able to assist with documentation, pelvic exams, taking vital signs, and any other necessary tasks. The last five weeks were spent with nurses who administered chemotherapy. I assisted them with many tasks and got to know many of the patients throughout their journey. I loved learned as much as I could about oncology, since I didn't have much knowledge before. I also really enjoyed interacting with and getting to know many of the patients. They were all so kind and positive despite everything going on in their lives, which really made a huge impact on me. I am so grateful for the entire experience and for everyone I met at the Women's Cancer Center.

Intern Under Program Director
May - July 2018 • Durham, NC
What I liked
I liked how I was able to experience working under the Program Director of Duke Antimicrobial Stewardship and Infection Prevention Networks. I learned administrative tasks and I completed other work related to promotion and marketing purposes of the Duke center. I worked with excel, creating a database, writing articles for the center and shadowed my preceptor as well. I also was able to take a piece of my internship back to my school as my preceptor and I created a poster for the student health center.
What I wish was different
Since I was in a program that allowed me to go and experience an internship at Duke Health Systems, I was given a limited amount of time to complete the internship. I spent six weeks at Duke and one week at my school, NCCU. I wish I was given more time at Duke as I was only able to capture a small piece of a cycle relating to research studies. I still experienced a lot but time is something I wish would have been different.
Advice
I would say to be open to everything and not mind staying late to complete work. Make sure to really be on top of your game and always ask questions. I am a naturally shy person but my preceptor was very encouraging so I made sure to ask him everything I could think of when I was doing my internship.
