Dubuque Area Chamber of Commerce

Government Affairs Intern

May - August 2023 • Dubuque, IA

What I liked

During this experience I not only enjoyed the opportunity to meet influential people within the community, but I enjoyed the people that I was working for. Even after my supervisor had moved on to a different position they quickly assigned me to another task. Very grateful for the adaptability that I was able to show case during this internship, and hope to keep in contact with those whom I met during this time.

What I wish was different

Although this internship did include payment, it was not an hourly accruement. I did not take this internship for the money, therefore I would do this again even if there was no pay. The knowledge and people I met were more than rewarding.

When looking for an internship as a pre-law student I was only looking at courthouses, law firms, etc. However, in the practice of law, the more you know the better. Making connections within the community that you wish to work is just as important to learning about the actual field of work.
