Commercial Design Intern

What I liked

I loved working in a demanding, high stakes environment. The company was very small — only about 30 people — and I was the third in-house designer on our respective design team. The company dealt in designing custom design pieces, storefronts, glass decals, ADA signage, wayfinding, environmental branding, and much more. I was juggling around 5-10 design projects a day and got to work on site at headquarters like google, Facebook, Amazon, etc.

What I wish was different

I wish that there was more dialogue between different teams and that designers’ contributions were pooled.

Advice

The most important thing to do as an intern is to make yourself readily available at any time for superiors in your team. Communicate with them freely about your concerns, your strengths, what you need help working on. Never feel ashamed if at times you feel under qualified, just try your best.
