Construction Management Intern

June 2018 - August 2019 • Austin, TX

What I liked

I loved how they introduce you to the company and get you with all the other interns. They took us to different projects in central Texas and also had us work on projects together. They gave us space to really learn what life on the project was like.

What I wish was different

I don’t wish much had been different except that sometimes being lost on how to proceed with a task or not really useful, but also feeling like it was my own lack of knowledge.

Advice

I didn’t get invited back because they thought I wasn’t as ambitious as the other interns, and while I was disappointed, the experience helped me to realize that I’d rather pursue something less time consuming and intense than commercial construction management. It’s encouraged me to pursue a different avenue in the field of construction that I’m really happy with because it gives me time to explore my various interests and to volunteer- inspecting. Which will also allow me to enter back into management later on in life.

Project Engineer Intern

May - September 2019 • San Diego, CA

What I liked

DPR takes great care of their interns in transitioning them into their positions. Along with work, there were a few fun activities they did for the interns. The position itself was both serious but also enjoyable. I got to meet so many new people and build relationships that will last for awhile.

What I wish was different

Advice

I would say don't be afraid to be active within the internship. Take on extra work when you can, ask plenty of questions, and try to meet as many new people as you can.

Project Engineer

May - August 2018 • Washington, DC

What I liked

The company atmosphere and culture. Although, I did not have a passion or background in construction management as many of the other interns, I had a great experience and realized what a phenomenal company culture should look like and be modeled after.

What I wish was different

I wish there was more opportunity for me to gain exposure in other fields and other job sites. We did have the chance to tour other sites, but it would have been nice to understand more about the field prior to the site visits.

Advice

I would highly recommend this company for anyone interested in construction management or looking to gain exposure in this field. If it is not your passion, you will still have a great time interning with the company. They truthfully want their employees to do well and enjoy the work they do. That was a core value of theirs alongside "ever-forward" technological advancement in the industry.

Project Engineer Intern

May - August 2018 • Atlanta, GA

What I liked

Great people and location. Company really cares about employees and their core values in their work. Gave me real work to do that made a lasting impact on projects and I had direct interaction with clients. Also had the opportunities to take training classes and receive certifications.

What I wish was different

I wish I would have gotten to experience some of the less conventional roles or other roles within the company. I also wish I would have been on-site more or toured some of the other projects in the area.

Advice

Get out and do more! Both in and outside of work - explore fun things to do in the area and ask employees for their recommendations. Ask others about their experiences within the company and how they got there and why they have stayed.

Project Engineer Intern

June - August 2018 • San Francisco, CA

What I liked

I loved entering a new unfamiliar industry and learning quickly so I could contribute to my team in meaningful ways. DPR gave me a lot of responsibility and treated me as an equal despite my inexperience.

What I wish was different

Overall, I was really impressed with my experience as an intern. I would have liked to be able to work closer to my home, but DPR did their best to place me in a good location.

Advice

Come into this internship with an open mind and be ready to feel overwhelmed. Don't worry if you are confused at first; DPR wants you to succeed and learn which parts of the industry you like and which you don't, and they do a good job of checking in with you throughout the summer to style your internship to your personal preferences and curiosities.
