Corporate Tax Intern

May - August 2019 • Richmond, VA

What I liked

I really enjoyed how much freedom, respect, and responsibility they gave me. They treated me as if I were already a full-time employee.

What I wish was different

I wish I would have participated in more of the intern activities. I didn't network as much as I could have.

Advice

Network and Learn! This is your opportunity to get to know a company firsthand and understand its culture. There are so many knowledgeable people that are excited to meet you, so don't be afraid to speak and engage in conversation. Also, ask questions if you're interested in something or need clarification. They know you don't know everything and they want you to ask for assistance.

GIS Intern

May - August 2019 • Salt Lake City, UT

What I liked

Very flexible hours that allowed me to still get my 40 hours in and travel on the weekends. I was able to travel to 11 new states and 9 National Parks.

What I wish was different

The work load was very repetitive so I wish i would have learned to do different things while I was there.

Advice

Make sure to apply for internships as soon as possible. Apply for as many as you can find even ones that you aren't 100% qualified for. You never know what the employer is looking for and it is always possible that you were the only one who applied!

Pipeline Safety Intern

May - August 2019 • Akron, OH

What I liked

I loved the hands on experience and learning while working. Everyone was extremely friendly and willing to answer any of my questions and provide feedback to the work I was doing. I was able to visit different departments through the company as well as attend developmental workshops with other interns and complete my own projects with other experienced, full time employees. It was a very balanced internship where I gained experience in many areas.

What I wish was different

The only thing I wish was different about this internship was being able to choose which office I was able to work out of each day. For the most part, I had to work out of the Akron office and I was allowed to visit other offices but I couldn't choose everyday.

Advice

Network as much as you can while at an internship and get to know as many people as you can. There is so much that can be learned by just talking to other people and it opens up a world of opportunities.

Electrical Engineering Intern

May 2019 • Richmond, VA

What I liked

I enjoyed interning at Dominion Energy! There were several intern events, networking opportunities, and seminars that involved educating interns and even full-time employees on professional development and personal budgeting. What stood out to me the most was that even though I was just an intern, my opinion and ideas were genuinely respected and encouraged on a daily basis.

What I wish was different

I personally wish I would have attended more of the intern events.

Advice

My recommendation to a future intern or employee would be the same as for an individual starting a new position at any other company. I recommend you network with as many people as possible, take on new challenges, ask questions, and more importantly be open to coaching from your peers.

Civil/Mechanical Design

May - August 2019 • Mineral, VA

What I liked

My previous jobs were very disorganized and informal. Dominion has got it together as far as logisitics. Good co-workers, relaxed work environment, high likelihood of getting a job offer if you intern through your summer of junior year. Good benefits, stable company, nuclear is low/zero CO2 emissions. You could spend a whole career working at a nuclear plant and never learn all there is to know about how it works. Lots of different areas for engineers to try out and work in.

What I wish was different

Biggest comment from all the interns (specifically at North Anna plant) was that they expected more work to do. As a caveat, this isn't because Dominion doesn't care or doesn't want to give you the work . But because of so many nuclear industry codes and regulations and all the qualifications necessary for everything, there isn't much they can give you in the way of big projects. We did do some meaningful projects, but there was definitely some down time.

Advice

If you want to work at Dominion, interning is very important. They definitely like to hire from their intern pool. Also working at the plants will be more hands-on. Working at Nuclear HQ in Innsbrook is more analytical.

Construction Project Management Intern

May - August 2019 • Dumfries, VA

What I liked

I was given lots of responsibility and my superiors trusted me to do basically the same things as a normal full-time new employee.

What I wish was different

The pacing of the internship was not perfect - sometimes I was swamped by work and other times there was nothing to do. I feel like this is normal for most jobs though.

Advice

Ask for more work and ask tons of questions! Dominion loves that sort of thing!
