Dominican University of California

Front Desk Receptionist/Liason

June - September 2021 • San Rafael, CA

What I liked

I really enjoyed the camaraderie and friendliness of all of my coworkers and other Dominican community members. I made many new friends while simultaneously learning new things almost every day, whether it was simply learning more about professional or business courtesy of a certain situation or how to go about properly completing daily operations such as recording and accounting for the cash incurred throughout the day at the front desk. At some points, I found myself quite bored, but I ended up liking that part too because it pushed me to stay active, to do something to keep my brain engaged with the job and using those slower hours to focus on little things within the job that I could improve on.

What I wish was different

I wish I had gotten a little more hands-on experience with some of the more operational activities within the athletic department rather than spending most of my time at the front desk. I got to take a break for a few weeks helping out with the youth sports camps, but other than that I was mostly a receptionist.

Advice

One piece of advice I'd share based on this experience is to not be afraid to reach out, because you never know what will stand on the other side of that conversation. I was able to land this job because I simply reached out to the director of the athletic department, whom I had known from years past, and asked if he had any job or internship positions available this summer. On top of that, I would advise other students to show enthusiasm and a willingness to learn and work, from that initial conversation through the middle all the way to the end of your job.
