Dollar Tree

Retail Stocker

June 2019 • La Grange Park, IL

What I liked

It's simple and really straight forward. Also, the hours are really great because I work mornings, so I can go to school after work.

What I wish was different

The only thing I wish would have been different would be that I started sooner.

Advice

Depending on the store you may have to work on multiple departments, so learn the store's layout as soon as you can.

What I liked

Time went by fast

What I wish was different

Pay was horrible for all the work needed to be complete. Often boss would leave me to run the store without any training by myself with lots of customers

What I liked

Having some sort of income every two weeks.

What I wish was different

I wish I would've gotten a higher paying job, and one with more set hours.

Advice

It's really nice to just go ahead and get a job, even if you're not making much you still have a source of income that could be saved up and used for later. Its worth it.

I wish that I would have applied earlier. This job was an opportunity that has been available to me for a long time and I never took it.

What I liked

The management is very friendly, and are willing to assist with anything you need help with. Hours aren't too long either; about five hours long if you're part time like I am. Most of the time, my job is relatively simple; I just man a register. On occasion, I may be assigned to restock shelves during down time or sweep up before closing.

What I wish was different

The breaks are only eleven minutes long, which isn't terrible, but it doesn't help if you're having an already stressful shift. A personal issue I have is whenever I work, there's no radio or music playlist playing. It's complete silence. During Christmas time last year, one of the then managers played Christmas music during my shifts. Apparently, one of the customers complained about it, telling Corporate that it offends them.

Advice

Be very prepared and careful to work with the public. Since this is a lower income store, in a particular lower income area, especially with a Walmart quite literally five minutes away, you will see a very wide variety of people from everywhere. Most are friendly and nice enough, but like with any job, you'll get some who are either in a rush or just ill-tempered. Be prepared to help them. If you can, then great. If not, then don't be afraid to call up management for assistance.

Sales Associate

July 2018 - October 2019 • Murray, KY

What I liked

Very friendly management, worked well with college schedule, short shifts (usually 4-5 hours)

What I wish was different

Better notice about scheduling changes, more consistent hours, better training and clarification of what is wanted

Advice

Most dollar trees are severely understaffed and more stressful to work at from what I hear, though this one is managed very well (because the store manager works harder than what she's getting paid for). The fact that they only pay minimum wage makes people not work there for very long usually. You're better off applying at another retail store unless you need to be hired immediately.
