Dog Handler

What I liked

I enjoyed working with the animals and learning about canine behaviors and personalities. I worked in Teeny Town with the smaller dogs. After just a week or so, I was able to learn the names and personalities of almost every dog in the facility. I became so much more knowledgeable about dog training that I could predict their actions and teach them tricks. I loved teaching dogs to jump through the hula-hoop.

What I wish was different

The environment itself was depressing and several of the employees are unbelievably immature and unprofessional. The gossip between workers was higher than any other job I've ever had. The buildings get very warm during the summer and it is almost impossible to escape the heat. The management is disorganized and unsympathetic. There were so many rules about what we couldn't do with the dogs that it sometimes made my job difficult and boring. I wasn't allowed to hold any of the small dogs, despite various dog parents instructing me to give their animal lots of love and cuddles. On numerous occasions I was instructed to force a terrified dog to confront their fears alone. No coddling at this business.

Advice

If you aren't a people person, this experience isn't for you. The dogs are wonderful, but they are unfortunately, the only wonderful thing about doggy daycare. Also, don't fall into the swarm of gossipers. Don't take sides during arguments; remain neutral.
