Construction Estimator Intern

March - June 2019 • Phoenix, AZ

What I liked

I liked that I was able to learn a lot in a short amount of time. I'm not exactly in the construction field but I was grateful for the opportunity to get experience in a related field. They gave me a plenty opportunities to expand my skills and gain extensive knowledge on projects that I initially knew nothing about. I got to work with friendly and helpful people who for the most part wanted me to do well and stick around. They gave me my own office and computer which was intriguing.

What I wish was different

This is a family owned business, I felt there was favoritism which led to some neglect to others. I was mostly a paper pushing intern, and they gave a lot of small pieces work for a larger project. Then you finished your part or had a question it wouldn't be addressed until weeks later and blamed you for not getting it done. When in actuality the owner or project manager need to provide the approval or next steps. Also the commute was far and I wish I had a better mentor.

Advice

Keep an open mind and work hard. They noticed how fast I caught on to new things and I'd like to believe they wanted me to go further. Have a positive attitude and be interested in the field before you apply, they noticed I wasn't passionate and that's the reason why it ended.
