Rotational Internship (Indoor Business and Outdoor Landscape Operations)

May - August 2018 • Grand Rapids, MI

What I liked

You get to spend half the time outdoors working through various parts of the landscaping company, and half the time indoors working through different parts of the business/indoor side of things (if you want). They are flexible and will work with your interests. Friendly people.

What I wish was different

Wish I would have known going in that the beginning of summer is the busiest and hardest time, and plan on some really difficult outdoor work days, often longer than 10 hours, with just a lunch break (40-46 hrs/week in four days a week). But... you only work four days/week, and the work gets easier as things get less busy, and you spend half the summer indoors in a/c anyway, so that makes up for it somewhat.

Advice

If you have no interest whatsoever in landscaping or outdoor work this may not be for you. If you can't work hard outside this may not be for you. On the other hand, if you like working outside but want to also start seeing how business/management/administration stuff works, this could be a great fit. For me, I had a background in horticulture but a desire to learn business. This was a good transition type of internship for me. Learned a ton about running a business, spoke with everyone from the lowest level laborers to top management/officers.
