DivcoWest

Summer Intern

June - July 2020 • San Francisco, CA

What I liked

The summer internship program with DivcoWest equipped me with the knowledge and tools necessary to begin my career in the commercial real estate industry. From a high-level overview to the nitty gritty of financial modeling and analysis, Divco was able to foster an environment of learning and collaboration, even during a global pandemic.

What I wish was different

The program was only 6 weeks, I would have enjoyed a longer program to further envelope myself in the Commercial Real Estate industry.

Advice

- Don't be afraid to ask questions - Build your network now - "Problems sharpen the mind" - Be sure to take every problem head on and understand the mental growth that problems facilitate.

What I liked

This past summer at DivcoWest gave me an incredibly in-depth overview of what it is like to work on the buy-side of CRE and the numerous different strategies that are used. Also, I gained valuable skills in regards to financial modeling and the technical side of CRE.

What I wish was different

Rotational Program. More specific work with certain teams based on interns interests.

Advice

Be available to help. Offer people at the firm help on anything because making connections early will be beneficial later in the internship when they actually do need help they will reach out to you first.

What I liked

I liked that we were given exposure to so many different aspects of the Commercial RE industry, which gave us the opportunity to experience the industry from all sides (incl. finance, acquisitions/asset management, HR, development, etc). I also appreciated how willing everyone was to help the interns, whether in projects or through independently scheduled one-on-one calls, In terms of the company culture, I enjoyed Divco's focus on maintaining a unified, cohesive group that works together even while focused on different aspects of the business.

What I wish was different

I think the experience could have been made better by giving more leeway for the interns to participate in projects outside of the scheduled projects, so that we could gain more experience in the specific parts of the industry that we were more interested in. I also think there could have been more projects in general, because there was a good amount of downtime in the middle of the internship.

Advice

Take advantage of the numerous resources that are offered, whether by reaching out to specific members of teams that you could see yourself working on in the future, or just by making sure you are getting as much benefit as you possibly can out of the individual projects. The
