Customer Service Clerk

August 2017 • Topeka, KS

What I liked

I enjoyed closing customer service, which included counting register tills, running reports, entering data into spreadsheets, and problem-solving when there was an error in the reports.

What I wish was different

I wish that the processes at customer service were more stream-lined and up-to-date. we often had technical issues with bill pay services or Western Union.

Advice

Always be kind to your managers and fellow associates and your job will be much easier. It's easy to fall into the gossip trap, but try to stay away from negativity as much as possible. Always do your best work and have a professional attitude; people will like working with you and forgive you when you make a mistake.

Retail

July 2017 - June 2019 • Derby, KS

What I liked

Some people there. Also it made me a little more socially open/talkative, which is probably good in the long run and you see a lot of different type of people. It's mostly just a stepping stone though--definitely don't want to be working here for the next 5 years.

What I wish was different

I wish they communicated more to their associates. The biggest complaint I hear is "no one tells me anything." The particular store I work at also needs to do a lot better job at actually training their employees. I've been here for a year and I still don't know what I'm doing sometimes. Also I wish they appreciated their employees more. Someone just recently celebrated 20 years here and all they got was a few cheap coupons and stickers.

Advice

If you have the chance to say no, don't take on a responsibility you're not prepared for (For example, if you joined the company as a Checker and they ask you to work Customer Service 3 weeks in, but you barely know your way around the place). It's ok to say no. Also, communicate on your part. Pass on information to the next shift, return people's calls when they're expecting an answer, don't just be silent and let things fall apart around you--do something. Do your part, even when they're not doing theirs.
