Retail Sales Management Intern

May - August 2021 • Redding, CA

What I liked

The internship had a very relaxed pace. We worked on what we didn't know on our own timeline. I got plenty of managerial experience and expertise. Everybody was nice and caring and welcomed me with open arms, since I was in a new location.

What I wish was different

I was apart of the pilot program for this internship which meant it was there first year doing this exact one. This meant that we had to work through some holes and problems. Our mentors for this program were people who had never worked in a store setting before, and the whole basis of the internship was to get managerial experience in a store, so that made this process a little difficult.

Advice

Don't stress about the small stuff. At times it seemed like I had nothing to do, so I gave myself things to do. I think that this showed my initiative and helped my relationships with the current managerial staff.

I was placed on a team that actively supported by growth and took into account my personal goals and aspirations when decided which projects to place me on. I was able to learn all the skills needed for a future role in my job of choice. The internship was structured to ensure that us interns had opportunities to bond as well as understand the corporation and its goals.

Sales Associate

April 2018 • Williston, VT

What I liked

I enjoy the flexible hours that are compatible with my college schedule. I have also become knowledgable in my department and feel that I contribute to offering good service and offer something of value at my workplace.

What I wish was different

I would have liked to scale back my hours and also spend some of my summer in a field/position more closely related to my area of study. While it is an enjoyable part-time job, for someone not seeking to continue my career in retail, it doesn't offer much in terms of work related experience for the future.

Advice

I would highly recommend that young students experience working retail. It develops substantial interpersonal skills, customer service experience, and is eyeopening to those who have not had to learn how to handle difficult customers/clients as well as daily problem solving.

Customer Service Specialist

May 2019 • Portage, MI

What I liked

I love that the work schedule is flexible for students taking college courses because I can create my own availability with the different courses I have each semester. I like that I have learned a lot in such a short time, and that there are so many different kinds of opportunities to learn and grow in customer situations. I have also created so many networking opportunities for future jobs.

What I wish was different

I found that it was sometimes hard to communicate with the management team. I wish the managers were able to have more time to work closer to the sales associates on the floor of the store during the workday. Especially when negative customer interactions arise, it is easier to handle and continue on throughout the day when you know there will always be a manager who is experienced and able to step in and dissolve negative situations with upset customers. I wish it was easier to cross-train in the different departments of the store.

Advice

You will learn new things no matter how the experience is. If the opportunity is not as great as you thought it was going to be, try to take away the aspects you're really searching for in a future job, and if the experience is better than anticipated, then you will be able to grow within the position and learn how to do more things that you can add to your resume and skills.

Footwear Lead

June 2018 • Pasadena, CA

What I liked

I love helping out customers, and people in need. Especially the elderly who need help fitting into new shoes or young new parents that don’t know what size their children are.

What I wish was different

I love how diverse my job is, so there isn’t much I would have changed

Advice

Always go in with a positive attitude. Your attitude towards where you work changes your daily routines. So stay positive and give out good vibes, and you’ll get them back just the same or better.

Cashier

June - August 2019 • Saratoga Springs, NY

What I liked

From my time at DICK'S, I enjoyed working with my co-workers the most. They were all overall a very friendly and welcoming bunch that made my time at work enjoyable.

What I wish was different

Only major nitpick was that I wish I was able to refuse expired coupons, they do have a date on them for a reason.

Advice

There isn't really too much advice that I can give, outside be prepared from some crabby customers, as you seem to get a few every shift, which to be fair is pretty typical of retail work in general.
