Logistics Planner Intern

June - August 2020 • Livonia, MI

What I liked

With COVID-19 unexpectedly hitting this year, DHL did an amazing job with virtual networking, workshops, and a capstone event on top of day-to-day operations. They could have easily decided to forgo this year's internships, but they instead decided we were of enough value to continue the program. The program was clear from the beginning that the main purpose was to potentially hire us, interns, if we showed we were a good fit. The transparency is wonderful when you're starting out.

What I wish was different

I wish we had more time in the office setting. Nine of my eleven months this summer were virtual. However, this is due to the pandemic, and it is not due to anything under DHL's control. I was grateful I even got two weeks within the office space. It is good to see what your potential position feels like in the office setting.

Advice

Do a good job understanding the roles within the team you're assigned. I found the more I understood each role, the better I would understand what was being asked of me. This also gives you a better idea of what skills and abilities you may need to develop to move up the ladder in the future.
