I liked the hands-on experience of being in the classroom. I was able to work closely with the lead teacher in each classroom and learn more about things such as lesson plans and IEP. My schedule was also very flexible, and the staff was very understanding of my needs.
What I wish was different
I wish that I was trained more thoroughly in aiding students with disabilities during their one-on-one learning time.

Student Observer
March - May 2017 • Smithtown, NY
What I liked
I absolutely loved being an intern here because I got hands-on experience working with teenagers with autism and other developmental disabilities. The staff was super friendly and really helpful in helping me understand different techniques and behavior therapies used on the students. It really gave me a good insight into occupational therapy, special education and speech pathology and I truly learned so much. I was offered a position after my internship ended and now I currently work here so it was great because right after I graduated I had a job!

Advice
There are a few different locations for DDI, so be sure to look into which location works best for you! Smithtown location was closer to campus for me and the students are mostly in the teens age. Also as an observer don't be afraid to ask questions if you don't understand something!
