I wish the company cared more about their associates. Like yes the customer is always the priority but us associates and manages go through so much and the company does not care.
Advice
I would say look for other options before you apply here.

What I liked
Welcoming environment for retail. Easy to pick up on processes and work routines. Hours are flexible.
What I wish was different
Understaffed on shifts sometimes which was a hassle.
Advice
It feels intimidating at the start because they just throw you into everything, but give it a week and you’ll be fine! Really is a decent place to start as a summer job. That being said, it’s still retail.

September 2019 - July 2020 • Lincolnshire, IL
What I liked
Great environment, very nice people working there and pretty good discount on shoes. Very flexible scheduling.
What I wish was different
Certain managers acted too pretentious for working at a retail store. Unfair policies on coupons for employees. Customers were rude but that could be based on area.
Advice
Don't take the job too seriously, you're not getting paid enough for that. Do as you're told so that when you're more experienced than the new people, you can tell them what to do too.

IT Distribution Systems Intern
May - August 2019 • Columbus, OH
What I liked
Designer Brands has a very structured intern program and I liked that part of it. DSW made sure that all interns have a good time and learn at the same time. I learned tons as a developer and the manager was very nice to me, challenging me to get out of my comfort zone to become a better worker.
What I wish was different
I wish DSW would have reached out more to BYU and other West college students. It was almost all Ohio State University or Ohio area DSW recruited from. Also, it would have been nice if we had more chance to learn about other functions of the company in depth.
Advice
I highly advise to learn about how the company works and how the business works in general while interning, no matter what company you're in. It is such a valuable time that you should not waste any time while working there.

Advice
A piece of advise for those interested: enjoy working in a customer service job. A lot of people come in every day, and most need help with finding a shoe they saw online or needed more sizes or needing to be sized. It's a fun job if you make it one and enjoy people.
