Electrical Engineering Intern

May - August 2021 • Cedar Rapids, IA

What I liked

I really liked the people and the environment of the office space.

What I wish was different

I wish I had done a wider variety of tasks. It felt very repetitive.

Advice

Definitely give consulting a try. It’s not something I saw myself doing but wound up enjoying it.

Mechanical Engineer Intern

May - August 2020 • Cedar Rapids, IA

What I liked

I got to work under numerous engineers and got to see different stages of many different projects.

What I wish was different

Without COVID, it would have been slightly easier to dive into projects and have more time in person with clients and other engineers.

Advice

Don't be afraid to ask questions.

Mechanical Engineering Intern

May - August 2019 • Cedar Rapids, IA

What I liked

I loved the opportunity to work on real-world projects. I was treated as another engineer on the team and given the responsibilities of one. My work was valued and used in a lot of different projects. They were also very receptive to some of my interests, and they allowed me to work on projects in Wisconsin, where I'm originally from. I also liked that I was challenged and pushed out of my comfort zone at times, but I was also assigned a mentor who helped me whenever I got stuck.

What I wish was different

I wish I would've had a bit more background in the field. The University of Iowa doesn't have a big enough engineering program to offer classes specific to this field, so in the beginning I felt a little lost. Ultimately it ended up working fine and I was able to pick things up quickly, but still it would have been nice to have a bit more knowledge going in.

Advice

Don't be afraid to check out small companies! The summer before I worked at a Fortune 500 company, and I wasn't sure what it would be like to transition to a company of 50 people. I ended up loving it, and I formed really great connections with my coworkers, mentors, and bosses. I would also advise people to take internships with companies you can see yourself working full-time for, because if you do well at your internship that company may offer you a full-time position.
