Do not judge somebody too quickly off their exterior, there were plenty of great people I met who on their exterior may seem mean or uncool, but they ended up being great.

What I liked

This is the second place I've ever worked, and it was nice knowing that Deseret Industries is a job training workplace, which meant that i wasn't the only person who was still learning and sometimes struggling. This was especially comforting as I was experiencing extreme anxiety this summer, and I was grateful to work somewhere where I felt I could talk to my boss about my anxiety without worrying about it endangering my job.

What I wish was different

The first few days were rough. I hardly saw my boss at all and had no idea what I was supposed to be doing. But once I got to know my co-workers and finally caught on as to what my responsibility actually was, I really enjoyed it.

Advice

The work is easy, the training for people who are new to the workforce is excellent, but there is not a lot of one-on-one support if that is what you're expecting at a job-training program.

I would say that a job may seem crappy but if you stick with it good things will come from the experience.

Associate Volunteer

What I liked

I really enjoyed working alongside people with completely different walks of life. Some other associates had amazing stories about trials they had overcome, job coaches shared useful advice to help associates be the most productive individual they could be, and the development counselors were always there to give a listening ear. It was interesting to be in a volunteer situation where I could also offer some practical advice to those who were struggling to find stability in their life.

What I wish was different

I wish there had been more variety in the work I was assigned to do. Because I was trained in one area, they kept me in that one area the entire time I volunteered there and I was unable to branch out and interact with other people in different departments.

Advice

I would advise anyone volunteering at a place like DI to be mindful of the topics you bring up. A lot of people have unique and different backgrounds than a college student like me was used to, so I quickly learned that there were some topics that were triggering to people. Also, don't take on other people's burdens. You can help someone brainstorm how they are going to solve a problem, but don't do the mental work for them.
