Department of Social Services

DSS intern

August - December 2023 • Anderson, SC

What I liked

The atmosphere is friendly, inspiring, and instructive.

What I wish was different

More structure in some department on where to go or who to shadow, otherwise, I think this was an awesome opportunity to have been apart of.

Advice

Ask questions, and build professional contacts.

Child and Family Services Intern

August - December 2019 • Mexico, NY

What I liked

I enjoyed how it was an office and field experience. Much of my time was spent traveling around the county, visiting client's homes, and the family court facility.

What I wish was different

More concrete scheduling, but that was no fault of the internship. This was due to my work and class obligations.

Advice

Don't be afraid to approach caseworkers and ask for work. They will love the initiative and it will keep you from getting bored waiting for something to happen. Most caseworkers are more than happy to have a ride-along buddy to ask questions and get their opinion about the job.

CPS Social Worker Volunteer

June - July 2019 • Roxboro, NC

What I liked

I loved the atmosphere and the people. I was able to experience real life action of the social work world instead of just reading about the situations in a book!

What I wish was different

I wish I could’ve experienced the social work world for longer.

Advice

Go in the experience with an open mind and don’t be afraid to ask questions. This experience is for you and will help you on your future endeavors, don’t be afraid to say when you don’t understand something. Just network and have fun while doing it!
