Volunteer

July - August 2019 • Lincoln, NE

What I liked

Flexible schedule

What I wish was different

More projects to work on

Advice

Do not shy away from volunteer experiences because they don't pay. I gained a lot of experience and got to learn how it looks like to be researcher.

Undergraduate Research Assistant

January 2019 • East Lansing, MI

What I liked

I was able to gain experience with data analysis and worked to prepare the lab for the upcoming fall semester. I worked more closely with the principal investigator, which helped to build rapport and is ideal for getting a good letter of recommendation.

What I wish was different

I wish I had done more work earlier in the summer, and I would like to have done more work developing new experiments prior to the start of the fall semester.

Advice

Research can involve a lot of tedious work that appears to have nothing to do with science or experimentation, so it is good to not lose sight of what you are doing. A lot of small, menial tasks are required to set up something larger that is a part of the big picture.

Research assistant

May 2019 • Tucson, AZ

What I liked

I liked the opportunity to learn about the research process and the ability to work with human subjects.

What I wish was different

Nothing.

Advice

I would advise people to take advantage of the mentoring that comes with working in a research lab/setting.
