DNA Research Associate

September 2020 • Gillem Enclave, GA

What I liked

I have had the opportunity to work closely with a DNA research scientist performing forensic DNA research. This was a dream opportunity that has increased my drive to continue into graduate school to receive my Master's so that I may return to work full-time at this facility or a similar facility.

What I wish was different

The restrictions due to the Covid-19 pandemic have limited my experience by converting my work to tele-working half the time and not having the opportunity to perform formal presentations of my data. Therefore, it would have been ideal to participate in the program in its regular capacity, however I am still immensely grateful for this experience.

Advice

Don't be afraid to go outside of your comfort zone. I was worried about doing an internship in a different state, but this has turned out to be one of the most rewarding experiences I have ever had.

Student Trainee (Engineering and Architecture)

March 2020 • Corpus Christi, TX

What I liked

The facilities are state of the art and the organization is well funded.

What I wish was different

There are very limited job openings due to the focus on drawing down the number of government engineers. The shift towards contract labor is decreasing the available opportunities for new hires as the old engineers are staying in longer because of inflation, rising college prices for their kids, and the stock market downturn due to Covid. Generally speaking, the ranks are bloated over the 60 plus age range with a massive wave of retirement expected in the next 3-5 years.

Advice

Try to join a team that is relaxed about doing schoolwork during the workday.
