Department of Children and Families

Intern

May - July 2019 • Pensacola, FL

What I liked

I learned a lot about child abuse investigations and what resources Pensacola has to offer families in need. Everyone I worked with was really kind, and I earned valuable office experience.

What I wish was different

I wish that I had been able to spend more time there. Being there only two days a week made it hard to follow cases from beginning to end. If I could do it over, I would condense my time to about a month and work close to 40 hours a week.

Advice

Definitely ask questions, and don't be afraid to meet new people; they may be good contacts to have when you enter the field. Come prepared and on time, and be proactive in finding things to do.

Intern

September - December 2019 • Worcester, MA

What I liked

I really liked the experience I was able to be a part of. I got to experience all aspects of what the day to day life of a social worker would be. I got to take on some of the responsibilities as well with the guidance of my supervisor. I received lots of feedback on my performance and the chance to shape my internship in the most beneficial way to me. I saw all aspects of the department and received exceptional career exposure.

What I wish was different

Something I wish that would have been different what the interns are allowed to do and what we aren't allowed to do. Because these are licensed professionals and there are a lot of legal aspects that go into these things that are done at the apartment there are certain tasks that an intern cannot do for legality reasons.

Advice

Don't be afraid to put yourself out there and ask for certain opportunities, see what everyone is doing for the day and ask to be a part of the experiences you have not yet seen. Take initiatives. Learn everyones name in the office and well and their roles, because this will be very helpful in understanding how things are run.

Social Work Intern

May - August 2019 • Leominster, MA

What I liked

I really liked seeing different populations and how important it is to help those in need, I also really enjoyed meeting new people and making connections. I also really liked how there were a few different departments within the office that had various jobs in the process of protecting child welfare, seeing these and being exposed to them was a really amazing opportunity to see what aspects I enjoyed specifically.

What I wish was different

I wish I had spent more time there as an intern.

Advice

You have a lot of down time, take it to your advantage, ask questions, do your research and don't be afraid to ask for new experiences throughout the department.
