Dennys

Restaurant Host/Hostess

June 2020 • Chino, CA

What I liked

I like that I am part of a team that serves the big family of my small community. I have been given opportunities for growth in a very short time frame from when I began work. I get tipped.

What I wish was different

I wish people would more willingly abide to the business rules dealing with COVID.

Advice

Work is work. It is your means for money, and it is not worth your happiness. Working with customer service is tough, try not to take business personally when a customer is dissatisfied. Never rush or allow yourself to feel overwhelmed. The quality of each individual interaction is more valuable than the number of tasks you get done.

What I liked

I liked the fact that I'm able to give customers the best service they can possibly have and just be myself around my co-workers and manager.

What I wish was different

I wish for nothing to be different because it was perfect just the way it is and I wouldn't want to change it for anything!

Advice

Always be patient, humble yourself, and keep a smile on your face regardless of what you encounter with throughout the day.

Hostess

July - August 2019 • Roanoke, VA

What I liked

Flexibility and staff. Tips were also a nice part of the job.

What I wish was different

I’d have preferred to have a more consistent schedule. I would have work scheduled but often end up working past my scheduled time. And though I was behind a desk nearly all the time I was not allowed to sit. This was the reason I had to leave.

Advice

Keep in mind you have to stand the whole time. Staff normally 1 short break and even then there is often too much going on to really take it. Hosting is a very fast paced job where you really have to learn while you go. Learn from your mistakes, because you will make them.

What I liked

Some of my fellow employees were fun to be around and it kept you pretty busy. Walking out with cash after every shift was also nice.

What I wish was different

I wish they would have actually trained me at first, and also that the older more experience servers would be a little more welcoming.

Advice

Don’t work there it was a horrible job there are much better server opportunities in Logan for people over 18.

What I liked

I liked my coworkers. The time management skills I developed along with the ability to communicate clearly with others have allowed me to become a better worker.

What I wish was different

I wish the schedule had been different. It comes out every week and we have to plan our lives around that schedule rather than on out own accord. Also we are penalized for requesting days off. We either get our days cut or our shifts are doungraded. For instance, if we work in the morning and ask for a day off it’s possible we will be put to work graveyard. Also the management at the one I worked at didn’t really care for its employees. I fell a couple of times and not once was a report written about it nor was I sent to a clinic to get checked.

Advice

The job is fun and you develop a lot of patience and beneficial attributes but if the management is hardheaded your experience is going to be horrible.
