Denison University

Summer Scholar

May - August 2018 • Granville, OH

What I liked

I had time and space to dive into a project of my choice in depth, unlike during the school year when I'm having to balance four classes plus extracurriculars.

What I wish was different

I wish I had more opportunities to share my work with other Summer Scholars. Even though we had weekly dinners, most people only got to present about their projects once.

Advice

Make sure what you're researching is something you're passionate about, because you'll be spending a lot of time with the material! Also, be open to changing your research as you go along!

summer research

May - August 2018 • Granville, OH

What I liked

The department of economics provided us flexible time to work on our own projects. The department also provided us biweekly meeting to help us improve what we were doing back then. Moreover, I learned how to come up an original idea, find useful resources, analyze data and find interesting results from surveys. In addition, I also give suggestion to the current/past policy of maternity capital in Russia and the way how to improve it. I find it is very meaningful and useful for my research career.

What I wish was different

I wish I could have more time to think of something more novel and new to explore in the field. Perhaps add more interesting topics in this project with psychological aspects.

Advice

I love my research experience in summer, and I fully recommend people to do the same thing because it is meaningful and you will learn a lot from the experience.

Undergraduate Research Assistant

May - August 2018 • Granville, OH

What I liked

I loved being free to delve deeply into topics that I was interested in. I was able to shift and control what I studied and take as much time on each topic or resource as I needed to fully analyse or understand it.

What I wish was different

I wish there had been more to do, either structure or events, on campus. I often felt lonely or bored.

Advice

Make sure to keep on top of your research project, but take time to really dig into your topic as you're interest takes you.
