Mechanical Engineering Intern

May - August 2019 • Lisle, IL

What I liked

I loved the office culture. The Lisle office offered a small professional space feeling with a tight-knit community feel. Being a small office, it offered the opportunity for me to learn all sides of the company (sales, management, electrical/controls, business management, project manager, estimators, work site supervisor, etc.).

What I wish was different

Advice

- It is useful to have experience with simple hand tools (drill, saw, etc.), but not necessary. - Ask questions, get to know others in the office and outside of your focus area. You'll learn more about the company and the different sides of project engineering

Controls Engineering Intern

May - August 2019 • Brecksville, OH

What I liked

As a controls intern, I am mainly involved in two tasks: helping draft drawings for the projects and working on-site to get the conveyor system up and running. For the first few weeks I was in training, and after that I was on-site south of Columbus. Usually interns cannot travel with the company, but since it was a local project, I was able to go. I loved being on-site because I was not sitting at a desk all day, and I was able to troubleshoot problems and see a tangible difference in what I was doing. Now, I am back in the office working on constructing drawings in AutoCAD Electrical. It's a good balance between desk work and on-site work from what I can tell, although on-site days tend to be tiring and long (average of 12 hour days).

What I wish was different

I don't wish anything would have been different for my particular internship because I am glad I was able to experience both the desk work part of the job and the on-site part. However, for the job in general, I wish there was not as much travel and long days. I do understand that it makes sense for long hours while on-site to spend less time apart from home, however, it makes it difficult for a life/work balance.

Advice

If possible, travel with the company to figure out whether it's something you enjoy or not. Ask questions for understanding rather than just to get something done.

Finance Intern

May 2019 • Grand Rapids, MI

What I liked

Starting in 2019, Dematic launched a new finance rotational internship that allows interns to work in four different departments within the company, rotating every six months. The departments that are currently involved in the program are Accounting, Project Controlling, Customer Service-Finance, and Global Operations. This unique opportunity allows you to be a contributing member of your team and to gain experience working in a global company. It also allows you to see how the different departments work together and are crucial to each other's success as well as the overall success of the company.

What I wish was different

I wish I would have started this internship going into my junior year instead of my senior year, so I could complete the full two year cycle and get the opportunity to work in more departments.

Advice

Keep an open mind and just learn as much as you can. Before this internship I was set on going into public accounting when I graduate. This opportunity has allowed me to see other types of work in finance that I never would of thought I would like.
