IT Intern

March - August 2019 • Cleveland, OH

What I liked

I really enjoyed the people I worked with, my boss and the other department managers were a great time. It's fun, fast paced, yet laid back in the IT department. It's composed of an IT manager with the rest of the IT staff being interns. You get to network with the other interns, as well as everyone generally has a different major in the IT field. You get to learn from one another, which is a great experience. There's a lot of project work, especially preseason, so there's always something going on. This allows you the chance to maybe try something new, or build some practical business experience. Finally, the IT manager is the best thing about this internship. He does his best to accommodate your school schedule and tries to expose you to real-world, business related experience. Overall, this is a great place to start your IT career with; team work/individual work, communication, documentation, helping end users, troubleshooting level 1 problems (hardware/network/software issues), and basic hardware repair.

What I wish was different

More specialized IT roles. This is more of a general help desk position/IT admin position. Most of Delaware North's sites are "satellite" branches, most of the specialized IT staff is located at company headquarters in Buffalo, New York.

Advice

If this is your first IT job/internship, you'll begin to learn how things work in the real world. Things don't always go as planned or intended, so you may find yourself doing a bunch of various tasks in different directions. This job is also not a typical office job, you spend just as much time outside as inside, so be ready to work outdoors - rain/snow/shine.

Auditor

April - September 2019 • Milwaukee, WI

What I liked

Learned about the operations of a large scale business at Miller Park. Gained experience in management and auditing.

What I wish was different

I wish I would've worked with more financial information to gain more experience in that area than in management.

Advice

You need to be prepared to do any kind of work, although my main position was as an auditor, I helped out in just about every department in concessions at Miller Park.

Because the Detroit Tigers had a down year, that also had an impact on our business. That directly effected my pay.

Advice

Jump right in! Talk to as many people as possible.

Concessions Management Intern

March 2018 • Milwaukee, WI

What I liked

I really enjoyed the chance to learn how to make decisions on the fly without having to run everything past my boss. I also really liked learning how to be an effective manager by staying stern at times but also relaxed at others.

What I wish was different

I wish I would've gotten a deeper look at the actual operations and numbers of the company. I did a lot of manual labor and didn't get much of a chance to gain more computer and operational software experience.

Advice

I would recommend this internship early in your college career. It is a good beginner internship but not what I was expecting as a senior.

Entertainment Coordinator

April 2018 • Minneapolis, MN

What I liked

This summer, I worked at Target Field during Twins games and concerts. I took orders for food and beverages, helped set up for concerts, and worked as a bartender and bar back on the field during concerts. As a lifelong Twins fan, working at Target Field all summer was a dream come true.

What I wish was different

I wish I could have worked with a few more like minded people like me. Sometimes communication between co workers wasn't clear which led to a lot of issues with some co-workers attitudes.

Advice

Keep a positive attitude and give great effort!

Concession intern

April - October 2018 • Minneapolis, MN

What I liked

The management is very supportive of the interns and wants them to succeed the best they can in their company and in life. I got lots of experience with food service and hospitality and a new challenge was given to me every day.

What I wish was different

With working at a sporting venue, there were a lot of late nights after the game was over.

Advice

It is a fast-paced job, so be ready for anything. Also, try to shadow people from different departments, it helped me get a better understanding of how every baseball game gets items from point A to point B.

IT Intern

May 2018 • Cleveland, OH

What I liked

The environment, the people, and what I'm doing as an intern. I work in a very laid back department, but at the same time, we get a lot of work done. Not very many people can say they had an internship working around the Cleveland Indians.

What I wish was different

Finding this position sooner would have made my internship search much more pleasant. I was hoping this would have been a full time position but I felt I still gained valuable experience during my time here both in my professional and personal life.

Advice

Do not throw out the part time internship positions just because you only want full time. You'll gain just as much experience as any other student as long as you have the right boss/mentor to look up to during your time there.
