Dallas Police Department

Police Officer

November 2013 • Dallas, TX

What I liked

I loved not having to worry about school while at work

What I wish was different

That I had studied more

Advice

Working while in nursing school is hard but doable. Summer jobs are great but if you don’t work during the school year and can afford to not work in the summer, invest in some volunteer work instead. Learn about an organization or part of the community that you aren’t familiar with or think you know but could use a eye opener to see the little things know one talks about

Dallas Police Department Southwest Investigative Division Intern

May - July 2018 • Dallas, TX

What I liked

I worked in different aspects of cases, suspended cases, calling for additional evidence, picking up evidence, shadowing interviewers on cases, ride alongs, given tours of the different divisions, and networked with many officers in different areas of work in the department. There were also many events and fundraisers amongst divisions we got to be a part of. Everyone was so welcoming and willing to work with me.

What I wish was different

I wish I had more time. I was not able to experience certain things as much as I wanted to because of the short time period I had.

Advice

Every experience can be rewarding. Internships are a great way to gain experience in a field you are interested in. The internship does not have to be with a huge company, brand, or known person, it just has to give enough related experience to help people learn about themselves in that line of work. Personally, I never thought that I would consider working as an officer one day. I want to be an FBI agent and saw working with the police department as a chance to see if I would do well under the pressure of service work. I doubted that I would be cut out for the job, but with that internship under my belt, I have no doubt that I am finally being true to myself. I am choosing what I love, service work, over research and medicine. Try anything or everything because with each experience, you learn something about yourself. And that can get you closer to finding a field that brings out your passion.
