Operational Excellence Intern

May - August 2023 • Faribault, MN

What I liked

I enjoyed how hospitable and kind everybody was, I was completely new to the company and by the end of my internship I felt very comfortable. Management is experienced and very knowledgeable about their areas, they weren't afraid to take the time to explain things to me and I felt empowered to ask questions. Overall I learned so much and I am excited to return for another internship next summer.

What I wish was different

I really struggle to find any major downfalls or unfulfilled expectations. If you are the type of person who wants lots of structure and very specific tasks, maybe this isn't the type of internship for you. I think the person who most thrives in this environment is someone who is personable, a good communicator, and who isn't afraid to reach out to others.

Advice

Beyond the technical skills gained, you learn a lot about how a large business operates at a high level, as well as what day-to-day management in operations looks like. Being able to communicate between both was something I found invaluable and intangible and a great experience to have overall.

Air Conditioning assembler

May - August 2019 • Faribault, MN

What I liked

I loved working nights, the people I worked with were very fun and made work go by fast. I liked the fast paced environment I was in.

What I wish was different

I had to work almost every other weekend all summer. The weeks I had to work weekends I worked for 60 hours with only 1 day off and then worked 40 hours the next week.

Advice

I believe that everyone should work at a factory at some point in their life. It shows you a different side of hard work. Also it is interesting to see how things are built.

Human Resources Intern

May - August 2019 • Staunton, VA

What I liked

The employees were extremely kind and welcoming. My bosses trusted me to do jobs that were extremely important, such as calling people in for interviews and pulling out resumes that stood out to me for different jobs. I even sat in on all of the interviews and put new hires through the training and pre-employment process. I learned so much and experienced so may things that have benefited me, as well as my education. It made me realize I chose the right path in majoring in business management.

What I wish was different

I had such a great experience, that is difficult to find something I would have wanted done differently. If I had to pick one thing, it would be to have had my desk closer to the rest of the HR staff. They were down the hall from me, so it was quite a walk to get to them, which I did several times a day.

Advice

If there is an internship opportunity available, take it! I learned so much that I couldn't have learned in class. Experience is the best teacher. I stepped out of my comfort zone and now feel confident in my abilities and I'm more comfortable with communicating with people in an effective and professional way.

Mechanical Engineering Intern

June - August 2017 • Verona, VA

What I liked

Great exposure to a mechanical engineering industry before third year. Opportunity to lead projects and perform tests on your own. Good mix of work at a desk and work in the lab or on the production floor. Mix of busyness meant occasional days with lots of (paid) free time.

What I wish was different

No real intern culture, not very representative of an actual job in the industry since there was so little to be done so many days at work.

Advice

Make an effort to connect with the employees! Really nice people work there, and they know a lot about the industry that they would love to share with you.
