D.C. Public Schools (District of Columbia Public Schools)

UELIP Intern

June - August 2023 • Washington, DC

What I liked

It was a really great environment. The vast majority of people were very nice, and the program managers were understanding of any personal difficulties. You also have a nice end product that you can talk about at the end of the internship, one that is impactful and supposed to see continued use by DCPS. The program managers facilitated a discussion about how we can talk about the experience in resumes and future interviews, which I found to be helpful.

What I wish was different

I wish they gave some sort of payment. Interns are not provided food or transportation stipends, though we are obliged to use the metro to travel to different locations as part of the internship.

Advice

I think you get what you put into the internship. You have to be proactive in reaching out to speakers to hear more about their experiences and learn more about the office.

Summer Intern

June - August 2018 • Washington, DC

What I liked

I was part of an intern program, so there were about 30 other interns there. There were always professional development programs for the interns, and there was an oppurtunity to learn about what other people were doing.

What I wish was different

More meaningful work, less busy work

Advice

It's more beneficial to intern on a team that you can see yourself working on in the future.

What I liked

I got to learn a ton of information about how urban public school districts work behind the scenes. I also got a good work life balance so was able to enjoy the city.

What I wish was different

I wish my first supervisor has been better.

Advice

Your supervisor matters the most. Definitely try reaching out to them directly before even applying and see if you can hammer out an agreeable work agreement.
