What I liked

I loved the people I met during my job as well as gaining experiences that are hard to come by in a typical summer job

What I wish was different

The working situations and hours of work were very stressful at times but in consideration it was summer camp where the kids stayed all week.

If you have the option to work as a summer camp counselor, no matter where at, take it. It was one of the best summers of my life and made me realize how important summer camps are for people at all ages.

Summer Camp Counselor

May 2019 • Rolla, MO

What I liked

The three best parts about being a counselor at Cub Creek are memorable campers, sweet animals, and awesome coworkers! I love how you can visibly see the difference you are making in kids' lives by helping them have an unforgettable summer! If you are an animal person, this camp is for you with approximately 200 species of animals. It's incredible being able to teach campers about exotic animals and befriending, foxes, lemurs, porcupines, and more! By the end of the summer, you will also have a collection of unforgettable camp memories. Here are some of mine: -enthusiastically singing camp songs with campers and hearing some of them sing Frozen songs multiple times a day : ) -playing games with the campers (like the time we played mafia and the doctor saved the victim every time) -seeing the joy in the kids' eyes as they interact with the animals -teaching campers how to make friendship bracelets, and giving and receiving them -volunteering to get pied in the face by campers at the 4th of July celebration -picking and eating berries with campers -holding armfuls of affectionate purring kittens and also getting to spend quality time with unique animals -line-dancing which is the best even though it's a challenge to get the hang of it It's not an easy job, but the people and animals make it worth it.

Advice

I can't stress enough how demanding this job will be. It's a lot of hard work and you will most likely feel sleep deprived. As long as you realize this, and take care of yourself so you'll be able to take care of campers, you will be able to have a great time. My advice is to reach out when you need support and also use your days off to recharge and take care of yourself. On days off, you'll have time to do a variety of things in Rolla with coworkers (movies, bowling, restaurants, etc), and you even have the chance to go to St. Louis. Just remember to also find time for self-care and be well rested and balanced so you are ready for the rest of the week! I loved working at Cub Creek and I think it's a rewarding/challenging job that will help you learn and grow. And you'll end the summer with new friends, problem solving skills, and great camp memories!

Camp Counselor

May - July 2019 • Rolla, MO

What I liked

Working with all of the different species of animals and being the caving instructor

What I wish was different

More time off, we only got less than 2 days off a week. They weren't even full 24 hour periods.

Advice

It is a very tough job, but it can be very rewarding knowing you made a difference in a child's summer!
