Crown Equipment Corporation

Manufacturing co-op

May - August 2024 • New Bremen, OH

What I liked

At crown I got to grow in all areas. I got to learn how to manage time and projects. Crown was amazing at understanding my limitations due to summer classes. However, they pushed me to be the best version of myself thru having to adapt to new daily challenges.

What I wish was different

Everything at crown went very smoothly for me and I wouldn't have changed anything. If I did however want to change something it would have been to not take summer classes so that I could work more. Crown was very understanding of this and did their best to make adjustments that fit my schedule the best. Overall, I wouldn't change anything about the experience.

Advice

One piece of advice I have would be to pick crown. They are family owned and it really shows thru the atmosphere of the company. I never once felt overwhelmed or as if I just didn't want to be there. My piece of advice is talk with the advisor at crown and find the job that best fits your interests.

Mechanical Engineering Co-op

January - June 2023 • Celina, OH

What I liked

I really liked the flexibility and how easy it was to make it a personalized experience. I was given many opportunities to explore areas that I may not have been assigned to at the start. Everyone was always willing to answer my questions and show me firsthand what it was they were working on and what I could possibly get into in the future. I was asked a lot throughout my time there about what it was I was looking for and if there was anything specific that I wanted to be exposed to. Every answer I gave was taken seriously and I was always given the time and connections to fully explore any area that piqued my interest.

What I wish was different

The location is the primary thing that I would have liked to change about this experience. I am not used to the isolation of the area, and it was farther from home than I was initially planning for. However, even though I wished it were in a different location, I liked that this experience showed me something new. I saw a different type of community and lifestyles that I hadn't been exposed to before and I think that is a very valuable experience. I met many new people and did get the chance to learn a new area, even if it was an area that I wouldn't choose for myself long term.

Advice

Stay engaged with all the opportunities they provide you with and ask for any you want to add. They are actively trying to develop and improve their co-op program and the best way for them to do that, and the best way for you to get the most out of it, is to participate, engage, and ask your questions. I realized the importance of that a little later in the semester and I wish I had much sooner. They are very willing to work with you and even if you are nervous to ask for specific help or opportunities, it is always worth the ask.

Mechanical Engineer Co-op

January - August 2022 • Celina, OH

What I liked

I really enjoyed the NX CAD projects I was assigned to work on since they really helped me improve my CAD modeling techniques and drawing applications. The professionals I worked with were always willing to help me with any questions I had related to engineering. The challenges I faced improved my engineering practices. I really enjoyed getting to learn about and seeing the fork truck product lines they sell and seeing the final product. Getting to tour the Crown manufacturing facility located in Troy where their powertrain is built and tested was one of my favorite experiences during my co-op. Having the opportunity to shadow their engine dyno lab was great exposure to experience how their engines are tested before being sent out into the field.

What I wish was different

I would have liked to work more directly with other co-ops on projects and build those teamwork skills. Doing more hands-on testing tasks would have been great engineering exposure along with CAD modeling. I wish there was a company instructor-led training course for their CAD software instead of self-guided training. Having more social events for co-ops would have been a great way to network with others. Otherwise, I had a great experience at Crown.

Advice

As a co-op, you are there to experience and learn about your field of study and have real-world applications. Don't be afraid to ask questions when needed so you don't end up hurting yourself or doing something incorrectly. Finally, just take one step at a time and rather adsorb the new information you learn as best as possible and ask questions if you don't understand something. Also, be an active listener and write some notes about a project or task you are working on with your colleagues about items they want you to fix or advice they are giving you so it's not forgotten when making your corrections.

Eg3 Vehicle Systems

May - August 2022 • New Bremen, OH

What I liked

I really enjoyed how flexible the work environment was with being in office and working at home. This summer term allowed me to take on a lot more challenges with some being hands on and other being design work. During this term I was able to travel to a lot of different facilities in and out of state to see more of crown, go fix issues, and also see some facilities crown works with. The thing I liked the most were my co workers. They were always extremely nice and friendly to me. They would always check in with me to make sure I was doing well and to see if I needed any help with anything I was working on. Overall, the Crown people and workplace are amazing.

What I wish was different

This term was phenomenal. The only thing I wish was different was the length of my term. I wish my term could have been longer like my Spring Term, so I could learn a lot more and see some of the projects and features I worked on come into production. Even though it can not be longer I am grateful for the opportunities Crown has given me. I am looking forward to my next summer co-op there.

Advice

Co-ops are meant for you to learn and experience the field you want to go in to. The key about learning and understanding is asking questions. Even through I knew what I was doing I still asked a lot of questions to many different people. Through doing this it helped me further clarify what my thought process. It also allowed me to think about things from a different angle which allowed me to understand even more. Talking to many different people and asking questions also allows you to expand your work life which can help you get to know people and become friends. I really appreciate Crown because I have made some life long friends that are both co-ops and full time.

Mechanical Engineering Co-op

January 2022 • Celina, OH

What I liked

I really enjoyed the NX CAD projects I was assigned to work on since it really helped me improve my CAD design skills and practices. The professionals I worked with were always willing to help me with any questions I had related to engineering and they were very interested in getting to know me which was comforting to me. I appreciate the way they challenged me and push me outside of my comfort zone with the tasks they assigned me so I could gain more professional skills. I really enjoyed getting to learn about and seeing the fork truck product lines they sell and see the final product for the truck my team is responsible for improving. Finally getting to tour one of Crowns manufacturing faciliites where their powertrain is built and tested at was like one of my most favorite experiences during my co-op.

What I wish was different

I do wish sometimes my co-op was closer to home in Cincinnati or Dayton but I have enjoyed living in Celina, OH. I would have liked to work more directly with other co-ops on projects and build those teamwork skills. Doing more hands-on testing tasks would have been fun to experience instead of doing CAD modeling all the time. I wish there was an instructor-led training course through the company for their CAD software instead of self-guided training. Finally, having more social events for co-ops would have been a great way to meet other people.

Advice

Adjust your mindset from a college life mentality to a work world mentality as quickly as possible. Adjusting from a college schedule that I was used to a 8 am-5 pm work schedule was tough for me to get used to. Be sure to plan out what you are going to do after the workday to clear your mind stresses you may be feeling. Don't be afraid to ask questions when needed so you don't end up hurting yourself or doing something inaccurately. Finally, just take one step at a time with your new job and try to relax and rather adsorb the new information you learn as best as possible and ask questions if you don't understand something.

Engineering Co-op

January - May 2022 • Celina, OH

What I liked

During my Co-op I was given multiple projects and normal full time employee work. The group of people I worked with were always kind and extremely helpful when I had a question. The work was a great balance with hands on work and research/design. I learned a lot and was also able to apply what I have learned in college. Overall, it was great experience in the field I am majoring in and I am thankful for this Co-op with Crown.

What I wish was different

I was very pleased with how the co-op went. I do wish I was able to do more hands on, especially with other departments. This would have widened my experiences and knowledge. Most of my term I stayed in my product development group. By learning all of the department processes I would feel more well rounded as an engineer, but less skilled in specific areas. Therefore, I am grateful for the opportunities Crown has given me.

Advice

Don't be shy about asking questions. If you ask questions then you will be able to learn and understand a lot more. You might also be able to get opportunities to learn and explore more in your field. Personally I asked a lot of questions, and because of this I was able to travel out of state to Green Castle to help other engineers. This was an amazing experience and I fell it really furthered me in seeing what type of field I working towards. I am extremely appreciative of what Crown has shown me.

Operations Intern

May - August 2021 • New Bremen, OH

What I liked

The hands-on work supplemented information from classes very well. It gave a well-rounded experience.

What I wish was different

I wish I would have been able to work more closely with the main warehouses. I was placed within fulfillment services, which was a great learning experience. However, I feel that I would have learned even more at a larger warehouse.

Advice

Having internships is the best way to figure out what you want to do post-graduation. You can learn as much as you would like to about a certain role, but without the experience you will always question your passion for the profession.

What I liked

As an intern/co-op I was given real work that was actually useful to the company. My supervisor was always open and willing to answer questions or show me how to do whatever task I needed help with. I learned at lot and the position opened doors for me. Overall it was a great experience and I am grateful for the opportunity to co-op with Crown.

Manufacturing Engineer Co-op

May - August 2017 • New Bremen, OH

What I liked

The ability to work on "real" problems. Some internships and co-op are used to push papers or manage spreadsheets. At Crown I was tasked with solving problems related to the assembly line and implementing solutions. Crown treats their employees with respect and trust that they will do a good job.

What I wish was different

Nothing. I had a really enjoyable time at Crown.

Advice

Don't be afraid to try something out of your comfort zone. I had very little electrical experience before my co-op and they worked with me to learn more throughout my time there and I now feel more comfortable about electrical schematics and trouble shooting than I did before I started.
