Cabin Leader, Program Assistant

What I liked

Working at camp is the BEST job I've ever had! I was challenged to step out of my comfort zone, while also being supported endlessly by every staff member on site. This job helped me grow in my faith, develop interpersonal skills with adults and youth, and taught me valuable skills in servant leadership (all while having fun!) Pine Lake is unlike other camps because it offers a small and authentic community that lasts long past your time on summer staff. It feels like a family and I still find myself coming back simply to volunteer because I love the people and the place so much.

What I wish was different

I worked at camp for three summers and was consistently able to offer feedback during my experience. I felt that my voice was heard while working there, whether that be with program ideas, schedule changes to better our staff and camper experience, or even discussions on salary and bonuses. I knew that if I had a concern I could easily bring it up with the directors, so after the fact I can't think of anything I would have changed.

Advice

Camp is a unique experience where you can disconnect from social media and reconnect with those around you. I recommend taking advantage of the summer by challenging yourself to spend time with others and developing those relationships. It also is just a really beautiful place to relax and find peace in nature and has encouraged me to spend more time outdoors enjoying creation.

What I liked

I loved the opportunity to work so closely with children and be outside so much. I'm working towards a degree in education so this job helped prepare me for classroom management and lesson techniques. I enjoyed working with the staff and making so many meaningful friendships as well.

What I wish was different

I would love to see the camp have enough funding for their programming. There were many times that we had to improvise because we couldn't afford materials so we got creative and made it work.

Advice

Working at a summer camp is the best, hardest job you'll ever have. It was an extremely awarding experience and each day holds a unique adventure, but it is draining on the mind and body. It definitely requires learning good self-care techniques so that the children can be put first every day.

Advice

Being uncomfortable will become comfortable with time. You will learn so much about yourself and the world in just one summer.
