Free Clinic Volunteer

August 2020 • Richmond, VA

What I liked

As a volunteer at a Free Clinic, which by nature has to remain fast-paced, I was nervous of whether or not my skills would truly be helpful or if it'd take me a longer time to adjust and learn. From the first day itself, I realized that the Clinic is an amazing place to volunteer. The staff, doctors, and nurses are all extremely understanding and helpful. They know what it means to care for others, not just their patients.

What I wish was different

I wish that I didn't have to start volunteering during the Pandemic. Honestly, there aren't any more changes that I could wish for or want; just the fact that the Pandemic has affected how familial I could've been with an amazing group of people.

Advice

My biggest advice, which may change as I continue to volunteer at the Clinic, is to trust your strengths and be open with your weaknesses. Especially in Healthcare, it does no harm to let your colleagues and superiors know of what tasks you can do successfully or what tasks you may be uncomfortable to perform. It helps everyone run the clinic/organization smoothly and you will feel less stressed.
