Camp Counselor

June - August 2018 • Angola, NY

What I liked

Working as a camp counselor at Cradle Beach pushed me out of my comfort zone and encouraged me to grow in many ways. It taught me how to lead children in day-to-day activities, as well how how to tend to the needs of children with specific physical, intellectual, or mental disabilities. I enjoyed the camaraderie of fellow camp counselors as well as the innocence and lightheartedness of the children.

What I wish was different

I wish the daily schedule would've offered more time for self-care. Each session was at least a week long and each day at least 15 hours long. The job requires that the kids come first, by nature, however it was hard to meet that expectation at times without sufficient time for mental and emotional regulation, as well as socialization. The job was the lifestyle with little time off, and I think this could be remedied by introducing more breaks, or recruiting more staff, or removing structure from the schedule.

Advice

Be fully prepared to live in a completely different and closed environment compared to normal civilian life. This job is a commitment of perseverance through exhaustion; but as long as you take care of yourself and ask for help when you need it you will manage.
