Explorers Teacher

June - August 2018 • Huntsville, AL

What I liked

My favorite part about this job was definitely the kids. I worked with explorers (1-2 years old) and I loved them to death. They’re sweet, cute, and so lovable. Working with these babies changed my view of the world and life in general. The kids are so pure, so excited about everything (besides nap time), they haven’t been brought down by heavy experiences and sour thoughts yet. It taught me to see things in a more open light. I feel that I am a better, more capable person because of this job.

What I wish was different

My administration was was helpful and nice but communication between employees and admin was not optimized to the fullest extent and that made it difficult sometimes.

Advice

I think everyone can learn something from an entry/summer job. You’re basically at the bottom of the pole, starting from nothing to gain experience. This job taught me how to advocate for myself and ask questions until I understood what was expected of me. My one, most important, piece of advice though that I would share is to work on building relationships with coworkers and admin. The more relationships you build the more likely it will be that you like the job and also the more connections you make with people who could potentially help you out in the future. It doesn’t have to be immediate, for example, it took me around 2-3 weeks to feel fully comfortable enough to start making my coworkers more than acquaintances, but by the end I had so many people I could go to for help or even just to rant because they experience the same things I did.
