County of San Luis Obispo

GIS Student Intern

June 2021 • San Luis Obispo, CA

What I liked

I liked having my own desk and computer. There are a few projects that are ongoing so it is nice to know I always have something to do when I'm finished with the other shorter-term projects. I learned a lot about how database management actually works.

What I wish was different

I wish our team got to bond more sometimes. It's a small division, and people were still working remotely so it was only the other interns and our supervisor most of the time.

Advice

It would be really helpful if you attempting a GIS Minor at Cal Poly. Not only do you learn relevant tools to the ESRI Suite, but the class projects tend to focus unincorporated areas in the county which are a huge aspect of the people this department works with.

City Planning intern

July 2018 • San Luis Obispo, CA

What I liked

I liked being able to experience the many different areas of work within the County. As an intern, they spread out your work load so you get to try a little bit of everything. I also had the opportunity to work with stakeholder groups and better my public interaction skills.

What I wish was different

I wish I had been able to start earlier. The positing for the position was at the end of the school year and it is a long process to finally get hired with the County. I had about a month of my summer going through all the steps before I started.

Advice

Be outgoing and willing to take on new projects even if you are not familiar with the material.
