Cottingham & Butler

Sales Intern

May 2021 • Dubuque, IA

What I liked

I really enjoyed the culture at C&B everyone made you feel welcomed and important and that you mattered. Along with that I really enjoyed my job and co workers and everything that came with it.

What I wish was different

I wish I would have been able to travel more than one time for the internship as I learned a lot traveling and had a lot of fun traveling.

Advice

To persevere as always keep grinding as yes there are some setback but you have to keep pushing through and keep yourself motivated as it is so worth it in the end and the wins make up for the losses!

Client Services Intern

May - July 2021 • Dubuque, IA

What I liked

I liked how Cottingham and Butler invested a great amount into the internship program with the hospitality, projects, guest speakers, and networking events it provided. Cottingham and Butler got me out of my comfort zone and I am thankful for that.

What I wish was different

I wish I had the opportunity to do more tasks / projects from the sales role, since I was also intrigued in that role. I also wish we got to pick what department we were in. I was put in transportation, but would have liked to gain experience in the benefits and risk side aspects as well.

Advice

If you want to gain valuable experience in the insurance broker industry and complete projects that are vital to the company, then this is a great internship to be apart of!

IT Intern

May - July 2019 • Dubuque, IA

What I liked

Great company with a fun atmosphere and lots of company activities to partake in.

What I wish was different

This was their first time having software development interns and they did a great job of gauging skill level, but needed to provide more projects off the bat to fill time.

Advice

Come in with a will to learn and try new things.

Client Management Intern

May - July 2019 • Dubuque, IA

What I liked

We were assigned projects at the beginning of the summer that we had full control over, which we presented to the executive board at the end of the summer. I liked that our projects were relevant to the company's work (it wasn't just busy work we were handed) and they were continued to be used even after we left.

What I wish was different

The only thing I struggled with coming into the internship was not knowing much about the insurance industry, but they do a fantastic job of helping you with the learning curve and answering any questions you have.

Advice

Don't be afraid to ask as many questions as possible and immerse yourself into the role. Everything's a learning experience, and soak in as much as you can while you're able to!

Client Management

May - July 2018 • Madison, WI

What I liked

Amazing opportunity to learn about the insurance world. Supportive leadership and mentors. Opportunity to meet and talk with clients.

What I wish was different

More interns in the Madison office. Dubuque was the main place for the internship

Advice

I highly recommend this internship. I had done 2 internships before this one and was absolutely blown away. It was very professional and educational. I didn't think I would like working in insurance but I accepted their offer for a full-time position once my internship was finished.

Business Analyst Intern

May - July 2018 • Dubuque, IA

What I liked

I liked having several main projects that I could diversify my time around. It was awesome to see the projects have some sort of significance in the company. The culture was amazing as well; I never felt nervous about asking a question to my mentor or any of my department members. Outside the office, I really enjoyed living with the other interns in university apartments, and having the chance to network with company executives on the boat cruises.

What I wish was different

I liked being able to set up meetings with other analysts in different departments. Although this was not required, it gave me a full circle view of the company.

Advice

When it comes to working on assigned projects, be willing to bring something unique to the table by thinking outside the box.
