CORRAL Riding Academy

Equine Intern

May - August 2020 • Cary, NC

What I liked

Regarding the novel coronavirus, CORRAL made sure to keep both animals and people safe. Everyone who was allowed on the premises wore a mask and got their temperature taken before starting their work. I also enjoyed assisting the Equine director; she made sure that I was comfortable with any tasks that were given and took the time to teach me anything I needed to know. CORRAL is a welcoming organization that values its people.

What I wish was different

Personally I would have loved some more interaction with the horses. This was my favorite part of the internship: I enjoyed being able to get comfortable with handling the horses and getting close to them. I definitely had a lot of horse time, but I loved it so much that I would have enjoyed more. However, I understand that this is was a nonprofit organization and an unusual time for the internship, and tasks needed to be completed.

Advice

One piece of advice I would share is to designate a pair of boots for this experience. This is a farm and there will be field work and farm work, so you should probably have a separate pair of durable boots.
