Working with other undergraduates who were equally invested in the project. Figuring things out independently and then sharing with the research team and college task force.

Biology Research Intern

June - August 2020 • Appleton, WI

What I liked

I loved the subject matter of the internship. My responsibilities included analyzing genetic data from various closely-related South American fly species in order to explore their relationships with and defenses against their many wasp parasites.

What I wish was different

I wish the internship had been in-person, but the Covid-19 pandemic squashed this ideal scenario, unfortunately.

Advice

While working as an intern, it's completely fine if you identify aspects of the internship you don't care for as much. Internships are a great way to discern which subdisciplines you enjoy the most.

What I liked

Even though I got to work closely with and learn from a faculty mentor to perform high-level research, I liked all of the seminars that the Cornell Summer Research Institute provided me with. The seminars gave me information on how to be a good and ethical researcher and what opportunities are available to me now that I have had this research experience.

Advice

It's important to stay positive and focus on the little things when researching because experimentation is unpredictable.

I loved getting to know everyone who worked at the homeless shelter throughout my college-sponsored research experience in Cedar Rapids this summer.
