Cornell College

Undergraduate Research

May - August 2020 • Mount Vernon, IA

What I liked

Working with other undergraduates who were equally invested in the project. Figuring things out independently and then sharing with the research team and college task force.

What I wish was different

The changing landscape of COVID required many adaptations, which sometimes ended in disorganization. Otherwise, it was a good experience.

Advice

Be ready to work independently and be open to developing new skills and making connections.

Biology Research Intern

June - August 2020 • Appleton, WI

What I liked

I loved the subject matter of the internship. My responsibilities included analyzing genetic data from various closely-related South American fly species in order to explore their relationships with and defenses against their many wasp parasites.

What I wish was different

I wish the internship had been in-person, but the Covid-19 pandemic squashed this ideal scenario, unfortunately.

Advice

While working as an intern, it's completely fine if you identify aspects of the internship you don't care for as much. Internships are a great way to discern which subdisciplines you enjoy the most.

Student Researcher

May - August 2019 • Mount Vernon, IA

What I liked

Even though I got to work closely with and learn from a faculty mentor to perform high-level research, I liked all of the seminars that the Cornell Summer Research Institute provided me with. The seminars gave me information on how to be a good and ethical researcher and what opportunities are available to me now that I have had this research experience.

What I wish was different

I wish this experience had been longer.

Advice

It's important to stay positive and focus on the little things when researching because experimentation is unpredictable.

May - July 2019 • Mount Vernon, IA

What I liked

I enjoyed having the liberty to develop my own research project and being able to take it to a national conference.

What I wish was different

While the experience was great, there is certainly an important factor in the relationships you make on campus with others during this event. I wish I would have been a bit more outgoing and social during my experience.

Advice

Enjoy your time. Make friends. Learn and have fun with expanding your knowledge on a topic that you love.

Cornell Summer Research Institute Intern

May - July 2019 • Cedar Rapids, IA

What I liked

I loved getting to know everyone who worked at the homeless shelter throughout my college-sponsored research experience in Cedar Rapids this summer. I also appreciated the fact that Willis Dady Homeless Services has used my research in meetings and marketing materials because I know that my time there produced real results and mutually benefited me and the amazing organization.

What I wish was different

The building was being renovated as I was working there and it is fantastic and beautiful now; I just wish I had gotten to work there when it was 100% complete.

Advice

Willis Dady is a workplace full of dedicated and hardworking employees who truly care about the clients, donors, and each other, so if that sounds like a good fit for you, go for it!
