COPE Health Scholars

Health scholar

June 2021 • Simi Valley, CA

What I liked

The Things I got to learn from the internship and the patient care experience In the hospital setting. I got clinical experience too.

What I wish was different

If I never join the COPE I would never learn the Patient care skills and never got the experience. I am more confident now.

Advice

Go practice and get intern experience of what you want to do in future. It really helps.

Health Scholar

August 2019 • Newport Beach, CA

What I liked

The Health Scholar program is a very unique experience compared to many of the other programs available. When you take part in this program, the tasks that you do are more hands-on and you work closely with health care professionals.

What I wish was different

While in the program, there are certain restrictions for when you can take a break from the program and could potentially work during holiday breaks. However, there is some leeway to schedule around vacations.

Advice

One piece of advice that I would share about this experience is to consider your commitment when applying. Typically, people apply for the 15-month or 9-month program so it is fairly long-term.

Health Care Intern

July 2019 • West Covina, CA

What I liked

I like that it shows you a variety of different careers one can pursue in the medical field. They give you a taste of what it's like to work at a hospital, and they give you the opportunity to practice essential skills, such as taking the vitals of a patient, feeding them, bathing them, changing them, and being there for them.

What I wish was different

There are times where the intern/volunteer has nothing to do and each shift is 4 hours, nothing more and nothing less unless you're double shifting. What i would like different is to change it into 2 hours shift.

Advice

My piece of advice would be to manage your time and plan ahead if you're doing this program a the same time you are going to school and working because it can be time consuming, though it's worth it.

Hospital intern

May 2019 • Kailua, HI

What I liked

Loving the exposure to hospital life and daily interaction. Learning about doctors and special procedures as well.

What I wish was different

I wish I would have started the program sooner so I could have been closer to. Finishing at this point.

Advice

You have to be proactive in networking and reaching out to view new procedures. Do this early on and you will have a better experience.

Health Scholar and leadership team Department Coordinator

December 2014 - May 2017 • Oxnard, CA

What I liked

I loved getting to be in the hospital and shifting through various departments. You really get a good insight about what the departments do along with all the different jobs there are in healthcare. Leadership team was an added bonus because I became closer to staff members, made friends with the same interests as me, and got to build and develop leadership qualities.

What I wish was different

Sometimes it was difficult to communicate with leadership team members, but joining leadership team made the experience much more enjoyable and I really appreciated the program more as a whole.

Advice

If you put in effort and go talk to patients and staff members, there's no reason for you to dislike the program overall. You can learn so much from this as long as you're responsible, hard-working, and respectful.
