Engineering Intern

May - August 2018 • Auburn Hills, MI

What I liked

My favorite part of my internship experience was all of the professional development opportunities. The Cooper Standard intern program provided courses in topics such as networking, resume/interviewing tips, and presenting. In addition, I was able to utilize and improve upon these skills by doing things like an end of internship presentation to executives of the company, working on multi-disciplinary teams, and interviewing with various employees.

What I wish was different

One thing I would've changed about my experience this summer is that I wish I had done something more design related. While I did have some fun projects and was able to experience some of the design process, I wish I would've been able to contribute more to this. However, I understand that it is difficult to find opportunities for interns to do this.

Advice

My biggest piece of advice about this internship or any internship in general is to not be nervous. Since this was my first "real" job if you will I was definitely nervous when I started as I had never worked in a professional setting before. However, I quickly learned there is nothing to be afraid of, no matter how intimidating someone's position may have seemed, I realized everyone I worked with was very excited to work with students, get us interested in the company, and teach us new things. Once I opened up at work I made friends with a lot of great people, learned a lot about the company and automotive industry, and built a network I will be able to use for future opportunities.

Engineering Intern

June - August 2017 • Novi, MI

What I liked

They put me in charge of a project in my area competence. Friendly and positive environment but also results oriented.

What I wish was different

I had lived in Ann Arbor (an area with more young people). That doesn't have to do with the internship though

Advice

It is definitely good to look at what you would be doing as an intern at a company when you are considering internships
